Resources for Practitioners

Resources for Practitioners

Many of the resources we offer to parents will be equally of value to healthcare practitioners, whether as tools to support with conversations with parents or as a straightforward introduction to infant sleep and night-time care research in practice.

We also offer training and materials specifically for healthcare providers to learn more about infant sleep biology and safety. See below.

The following resources are intended for health care practitioners.

BASIS Training for Practitioners

The Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre research team offer three training packages aimed at health-care professionals whose roles put them in contact with parents, families and parents-to-be, although this training will also be of use and interest to peer supporters, volunteers, and independent practitioners such as doulas, independent midwives, and breastfeeding supporters.

Intervention Tool: Sleep, Baby & You

Sleep, Baby & You (SBY) is our newest developed programme and aims to help practitioners address parental requests for support around infant sleep issues. The SBY programme seeks to empower parents by providing information on what to expect regarding infant sleep, how normal sleep develops, and how to adjust to the demands of normal infant sleep.
The Sleep, Baby & You programme entails an antenatal and postnatal parent leaflet (discussion tools), practitioner guides, animated videos for use with parents, and practitioner training workshops.

The SBY Training Programme for Practitioners has been developed collaboratively by the Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre and Dr Pamela Douglas to provide practitioners with underpinning knowledge and tools to implement the SBY programme with families in a UK NHS setting. This programme has been evaluated and feedback has been positive from professionals and parents alike.

Basis webinars

Basis Webinars

These webinars self-directed and are hosted on our online learning platform, BasisLearn. They consist of pre-recorded video lectures, self-test quizzes, and a live online discussion with the Basis team to ask questions and share ideas for practice. One topic takes about 5 hours to complete, or about 8 hours to do both. The learning platform is open for 4 weeks to allow learners to stop and start as they wish, with the discussion session following this period.

Both courses begin with a module on Infant Sleep Ecology. The ‘Normal Infant Sleep’ course then goes on to cover Infant Sleep Development and Supporting Parents with Infant Sleep Disruption, whilst ‘SIDS & Sleep Safety’ covers Safe Sleep and SIDS research, and Communicating with Parents about Safe Sleep.

Individuals should book onto our fixed dates sessions which we run throughout the year. Please check back for future dates in early 2026 or sign up to our mailing list to receive a notification.
