How Babies Sleep: A Factful Guide to the First 365 Days

Professor Helen Ball, Director of the Durham Infancy Sleep Centre and BASIS, published her book ‘How Babies Sleep: A Factful Guide to the First 365 days‘ in May 2025.
Professor Helen Ball brings together cutting-edge science, anthropological insight and practical advice to provide parents with everything they need to help them confidently – and sanely – navigate the first 365 night-times with a new baby. It will teach you how to harmonise your needs with those of your infant, and empower you to reject approaches that make you uncomfortable and experiment with strategies that work for you and your family.
This book delves into the topics covered on the BASIS website in further depth and is an accessible read for parents and practitioners alike. You might even notice that it is cited on a few of our pages – look out for Ball, 2025!
‘Finally ― the baby sleep book all new parents actually need.’
Amanda Ruggeri, award-winning science and parenting journalist
‘A refreshingly clear and nonjudgmental guide to the universal yet daunting challenge of infant sleep . . . Invaluable’
Guddi Singh, paediatric doctor and presenter of BBC’s of Babies: Their Wonderful World
‘An accessible, intelligent account of the issues around baby sleep.’
Sue Gerhardt, psychotherapist and author of Why Love Matters
‘The most important voice we have to bring clarity.’ Greer Kirshenbaum, neuroscientist, doula, and author of The Nurture Revolution
You can access ‘How Babies Sleep: A Factful Guide to the First 365 days’ to purchase through this link to Penguin Books with hardback, paperback, audiobook, and e-book forms available.
You can also check your local library’s catalog to see if they have copies in stock.

The Infant Sleep Info App
The Infant Sleep Info App provides key information from the Basis website in a handy format for mobile devices.
The Infant Sleep Info website is full of helpful sleep info for parents and health practitioners, but it can be difficult to read the text heavy content on a mobile device.
The Infant Sleep Info App provides key information from the Basis website in a handy format for mobile devices. Covering normal sleep development, sleep location and sleep safety the familiar info from the website is delivered in smaller chunks. Two features are exclusive to the app:
- A bed-sharing decision tool guides parents through the key considerations for safe bed-sharing, and explains when bed-sharing may be inadvisable and why.
- A sleep log tool helps parents track their baby’s sleep, displaying this info on a chart depicting the range of normal sleep for infants of different ages to provide reassurance!
Key Features of the App
- Bed-sharing decision tool.
- Where will my baby sleep?
- How will my baby sleep?
- Sleep log to track baby’s sleep
- Sleep safety and SIDS
- Links to Basis info sheets.
- Links to Basis partner organisations
How much does the Basis app cost?
Nothing! It is free
Who is the target audience?
This app is intended for parents and practitioners alike as a learning tool. Parents can also use the app as a sleep log for their baby’s sleep.
Why is the app called Infant Sleep Info?
BASIS, Baby Sleep Information Source, was formerly known as Infant Sleep Info Source (ISIS). We renamed our website and brand in November 2018 but the app has kept the former name.
