Training for Practictioners
Basis offers training on key areas of infant research so you can stay up to date in your practice
Many of the resources we offer to parents will be equally of value to healthcare practitioners, whether as tools to support with conversations with parents or as a straightforward introduction to infant sleep and night-time care research in practice.
We also offer training and materials specifically for healthcare providers to learn more about infant sleep biology and safety. See below.

If you are looking to develop your own safe sleep resources, we offer images of safe sleep situations for use, free of charge
The Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre research team offer three training packages aimed at health-care professionals whose roles put them in contact with parents, families and parents-to-be, although this training will also be of use and interest to peer supporters, volunteers, and independent practitioners such as doulas, independent midwives, and breastfeeding supporters.
£75 per person, with an optional £10 discussion session. We are able to offer group discounts for groups of over 20 people.
These webinars self-directed and are hosted on our online learning platform, BasisLearn. They consist of pre-recorded video lectures, self-test quizzes, and a live online discussion. Each package begins with an introductory talk introducing the providers (DISC & BASIS) and the structure of the webcasts (20-30 mins), followed by 3 topical modules (approx. 1 hour each), self-test quizzes about each topic (10 min each) culminating with a 60-minute online discussion (5 hours in total).

Interactive webinar session with the BASIS team (scheduled, 60 mins) |
Individuals that wish to take part should sign up for a fixed-date interactive session via the Durham University booking site. Registered participants will be provided with access to BasisLearn for 4 weeks to work through at their own pace. At the end of 4 weeks, participants are expected to attend a live discussion session hosted by the BASIS team who will be available to answer questions, discuss any information not covered in the recorded lectures and you can share ideas for practice with other training participants. Upon completion of an entire package (webcasts and online discussion), access to the webcast material will end and a completion certificate will be provided.

The Lullaby Trust, a charity that is dedicated to keeping infants safe, has a wealth of infant safety resources available to download (free) for professionals as well as print versions available to order (print cost associated).
Unicef, the United Nations’ agency for children, has a page on co-sleeping safety for healthcare professionals with a conversational guide for when talking to parents about safety and SIDS.
The UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards published resources about infant products safety in March 2025. Access their campaign posters and videos, available in English and Welsh, here.
The Co-sleeping Image Bank is a repository of images depicting safer co-sleeping/bed-sharing that are intended for use by media, businesses and health care practitioners to illustrate co-sleeping stories and situations. We offer images in high and low resolution.

Many depictions of bed-sharing/co-sleeping used in the media and advertising (and even respected medical journals) illustrate hazardous practices. All of the images in BASIS’s image bank have been chosen to illustrate safer bed-sharing/co-sleeping arrangements.
